Temporary closure of NY 72 Road access to Govan Mbeki Road in Gugulethu
09 April 2026
The City of Cape Town would like to advise residents and road users that NY 72 Road, at its intersection with Govan Mbeki Road in Gugulethu, will be temporarily closed to all traffic from Monday, 13 April 2026 until Sunday, 7 June 2026 weather permitting and that there are no unforeseen delays. This planned closure forms part of ongoing construction on Govan Mbeki Road under the Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) Phase 2A project. During this period, no access will be permitted between NY 72 Road and Govan Mbeki Road, and motorists will need to use alternative routes.
‘Bahlali, siyaxolisa [we apologise for the inconvenience]. The temporary closure of NY 72 Road at Govan Mbeki Road is necessary to allow for the installation of new stormwater infrastructure. Our teams will be working on this section for approximately nine weeks. While this is a lengthy period, these upgrades are essential to support the rollout of the MyCiTi Phase 2A service through Gugulethu,’ said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.
Recommended detour
Road users travelling via NY 72 Road are advised to use Link Road as an alternative route. Detour signage will be in place to guide motorists to and from Govan Mbeki Road. Please refer to the map provided for additional guidance.
To minimise delays and inconvenience, residents and commuters are encouraged to:
- Leave earlier and allow for additional travel time
- Use lift clubs, public transport, or share rides where possible
- Avoid peak travel times where feasible
- Familiarise themselves with the recommended detour routes
‘The City acknowledges the inconvenience this closure may cause and thanks residents for their patience as these critical infrastructure upgrades are implemented to improve public transport and service delivery in the area,’ concluded Councillor Quintas.
